Warlock
The Warlock is the Diablo 4 class that launched with Lord of Hatred on Apr 28, 2026, the first Warlock in a Diablo game, a caster who binds demons through four Soul Shards, Legion, Vanguard, Mastermind and Ritualist, and who in Blizzard's words does "not serve Hell", but weaponizes it.
The Warlock is the class that launched with Lord of Hatred, Diablo 4's second expansion, on Apr 28, 2026, and the first Warlock in the Diablo series: a caster of "forbidden knowledge" who binds demons and turns the powers of Hell on themselves. Blizzard Entertainment puts it in one line: "They do not serve Hell, they weaponize it." Its 43-second class trailer shows it in the words on screen, "Control", "Dominate", "Master demonology", "Wield the abyss", "Harness hellfire" and "Raise hell", over a horned figure in crimson and summoned demons, and ends on the release date, Apr 28, 2026, and "unleash the Warlock class". Its class mechanic is four Soul Shards, each binding a different demon; with the Paladin, it is one of the two Lord of Hatred classes among Diablo 4's eight Classes.

A class across three games
Blizzard revealed the Warlock at the Diablo 30th Anniversary Spotlight on Feb 11, 2026, and gave it to three games at once. In the Spotlight's own words, the Warlock hones its earliest arcane powers in Diablo 2: Resurrected, takes a rebellious turn in Diablo Immortal and stands "at the height of their strength" in Diablo 4, a class about "turning the wrath of Hell against itself" with metal chains and flames, "like a heavy metal album cover come to life". Blizzard promised a full Developer Update on the class for Mar 5, 2026.
The same presentation, in GameSpot's upload of it, pairs the Warlock with the Paladin: the Paladin stands for light and purity, while Warlocks are its darker counterpart, "anti-heroes harnessing the power of Hell". That duality, the eternal conflict between angels and demons with humanity in the middle, is the theme of the expansion's Story.
Lore: the heirs of the Vizjerei
Blizzard's Warlock post of Mar 5, 2026 traces the class to the Vizjerei, the mage clan whose secret demon summoning helped ignite the Sin War. Demonology was outlawed again after a civil war among the mage clans, and its last practitioners, branded "Warlocks", were hunted across Sanctuary. Nearly 15 centuries later, underground enclaves keep the knowledge alive; many Warlocks are simply born with a "demonic insight" that gets them rejected, and some are guided by old accursed seals. Their studies have five pillars: Force of Will, Demonology, Hellfire, Shadow and Martial Weaponry. Many Warlocks, Blizzard writes, believe Mephisto's return is their ultimate test.
Wrath, Dominance and the skills
The Warlock runs on two resources: skills consume Wrath, while summoning demons and using their abilities costs Dominance. Its new keywords are Hex, Eviscerate, Shadowform, Demonform and Volatility. The skill groups:
- Basic: Doom, Molten Bomb, Command Fallen, Hellion Sting.
- Core: Bombardment, Umbral Chains, Blazing Scream, Hell Fracture, Dread Claws.
- Defensive: Dark Prison, Tortured Wretch, Wall of Agony, Nether Step.
- Archfiend: Rampage, Infernal Breath, Profane Sentinel, Tyrant's Grasp.
- Sigil: Sigil of Chaos, Sigil of Subversion, Sigil of Summons.
- Ultimate: Apocalypse (a huge Sigil that detonates), Fiend of Abaddon, Terror Swarm and Metamorphosis.
The Lord of Hatred launch trailer introduces "New class: Warlock" and then shows its play: red claws tearing out of the ground, a pink-skinned demon striding into a fight and crimson demonic forms bursting through a crowd.
The reworked skill trees give each skill real choices. IGN's review uses the Warlock's Wall of Agony as its example: the defensive wall of demons can be made to encircle an enemy and trap it, or to break apart after a while into a pack of vicious attackers.
Soul Shards
At level 30 the Warlock's class mechanic unlocks: the player fuses one of four Soul Shards into the body, which binds a Greater Demon and sets the core of the build (Blizzard, Mar 5, 2026). "Do not mistake your summoned demon as a companion," Blizzard warns.
- Legion: Ae'grom, the Demon of Legions, which summons swarms of Vile Child lesser demons; "Legions summon relentless fodder to overwhelm their prey".
- Vanguard: Abodian; Archfiend skills cast in Demonform summon extra demons, and the Warlock becomes a "monstrous front-line terror".
- Mastermind: Laalish; built around Shadowform and Abyss skills, seizing "the battlefield through oppressive shadowcraft".
- Ritualist: Vollach, "the fallen one", whose life force the Warlock siphons to build Overpower, Hex and Volatility; Ritualists "weave doom through blood-etched rites".
Each Shard also offers Fragment bonuses that refine it further, such as Legion's Sacrificial (Unstoppable while lesser demons are alive) or Ritualist's Scorching.
IGN calls the Warlock "the new hotness" and the class it preferred, for how far it reaches, from the Necromancer-like Legion options that summon demons to fight to the Vanguard build that turns the player into a demon, and for how the four disciplines can be mixed.
The class quest and the free trial
At level 15 a Warlock visits Ked Bardu to begin Disciple of the Forbidden, the class quest. Players without the expansion got a free trial with Season of Death Awakening: the Warlock to level 30 from Jun 30 to Jul 7, 2026 (Blizzard, Jun 23, 2026).
Blizzard's Season of Death Awakening gameplay trailer advertises it on screen (a Warlock free trial from Jun 30 to Jul 7, "play up to level 30") over a demon form striding through a dungeon and a Warlock throwing fire.
Reception and builds
PC Gamer, which scored Lord of Hatred 90, played the campaign as a Warlock and ended up with "the world's strongest demon": a Rampage upgrade that limits it to one big demon resummonable for free, with Dread Claws that also go off around him (Apr 21, 2026). Blizzard Watch's launch guide of Apr 27, 2026 recommended the Warlock to players who want something new or a blend of Sorcerer and Necromancer, highlighting Wall of Agony.
In patch 3.2.1 for Season of Hell's Legacy, Blizzard wrote that "Warlock is performing well" and toned down the Overwhelming Aspect and Metamorphosis (Sep 15, 2026). Mein-MMO's Season 15 tier list of Oct 1, 2026 put two Warlock builds in its top tier: Apocalypse and Blazing Scream. When the Artificer's Tower leaderboards returned on Apr 30, 2026, they included a Solo Warlock Ladder (Blizzard). More attributed picks are on Builds.
