Bosses

Diablo 4's endgame bosses are the Lair Bosses (since Season 8, Apr 29, 2025) in three tiers, Initiate, Greater and Exalted, plus the Butcher, Echo of Lilith and Lord of Hatred's Echo of Mephisto. Lair Bosses cost nothing to fight; their loot sits in a Hoard opened with that boss's own Lair Boss Keys.

Diablo 4's endgame bosses are the Lair Bosses: since Season 8 (Apr 29, 2025) they come in three tiers, Initiate (the Beast in the Ice, Grigoire, Lord Zir, Varshan and Urivar), Greater (Andariel, Duriel and the Harbinger of Hatred) and Exalted (Belial, Lord of Lies), joined by the Butcher in Season 12, while Echo of Lilith and Echo of Mephisto close the two halves of the story (Blizzard, Apr 21, 2025). Fighting a Lair Boss is free; what it drops waits in a chest called a Hoard, opened with keys that belong to that boss. In this clip Blizzard lists Lair Bosses among the six activities that Lord of Hatred's War Plans chain together, so most players now meet them as one stop in a playlist. Every boss here needs Torment I or higher, and the bosses are where most Mythic Uniques come from.

How Lair Bosses work

Until Season 8, the endgame bosses were called "Endgame" or "Ladder" bosses and you paid boss materials to summon them, which let one party member pay while everyone shared the kill. Blizzard's Season 8 rework turned that around: Lair Bosses "no longer require boss materials to summon", the boss drops little when it dies, and a Hoard spawns that each player opens with their own keys (Blizzard, Apr 21, 2025). That also means you can fight a boss to test a build without spending anything, and only pay when the loot is in front of you.

The keys are one item per boss: Malignant Heart (Varshan), Living Steel (Grigoire), Distilled Fear (the Beast in the Ice), Exquisite Blood (Lord Zir), Judicator's Mask (Urivar), Shard of Agony (Duriel), Pin-Cushioned Doll (Andariel) and Betrayer's Husk (Belial). Any Initiate boss can drop a Stygian Stone, which turns into the Greater key of your choice, keys stack to 99, and each lair's map entry says which key it takes and whether you have enough (Blizzard, Apr 21, 2025). Belial has no lair of his own to walk into: he appears as an ambush after you defeat another Lair Boss. Season of Hell's Legacy's Season Rank also pays out Lair Boss Keys.

A Lair Boss's first Unique comes from its own item pool, and in a party each extra member adds a 33% chance of one more Unique from that pool. Since patch 3.2.1 (Sep 15, 2026), Mythic Uniques from Initiate and Greater bosses and from Belial's Hoard come only from that boss's pool, Initiate bosses drop Mythics as often as Greater ones, and Belial's rate rose slightly (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). That makes the bosses the main way to aim at a particular Mythic Unique.

Each boss

  • Varshan (Varshan the Consumed) was the boss of Season 1, Season of the Malignant (Jul 20, 2023), whose season also brought the Malignant Tunnels dungeons (Blizzard, Jul 2023).
  • Lord Zir, the vampire lord of Season 2 (Season of Blood, Oct 17, 2023), arrived with what Blizzard called "5 additional bosses" (Blizzard, Oct 2023): Maxroll listed them as Echo of Varshan, Grigoire the Galvanic Saint, the Beast in the Ice, Echo of Duriel and a harder Lord Zir (Maxroll, Oct 2023).
  • Duriel, King of Maggots, was the top of the old boss ladder. Andariel, the Maiden of Anguish, joined him in Season 4 (May 14, 2024) in Hanged Man's Hall east of Tasarak, at the same tier and drop rate (Blizzard, Apr 30, 2024).
  • Urivar, the Knight Penitent who leads the Burned Knights, and the Harbinger of Hatred came with Vessel of Hatred in October 2024 and need that expansion.
  • Belial, Lord of Lies, returned in Season 8: Belial's Return and stayed as the only Exalted boss.
  • The Butcher, who also turns up as a rare ambush (Blizzard, Jul 30, 2024), became a permanent Lair Boss in Season of Slaughter (Season 12, Mar 11, 2026), dropping five Uniques of his own: Blood-Mad Idol, Wendigo Brand, Rustbitten Dirk, Wyrdskin and Thousand-Eye Reaver (Blizzard, Mar 5, 2026). War Plans can also drop a random Butcher into your Pit runs.

Tormented bosses

Season 4 added Tormented Echoes: level 200 versions of every summonable boss, summoned with Stygian Stones from the Pit, dropping item level 925 gear and a Resplendent Spark on your first kill (Blizzard, Apr 30, 2024). Tormented versions are still in the game: patch 3.0 notes fixed bugs in the Tormented Echo of Duriel and Tormented Echo of Urivar fights (Blizzard, Apr 2026).

Echo of Lilith and Echo of Mephisto

Echo of Lilith is the base game's pinnacle boss, a rematch with the Daughter of Hatred in which she can destroy the floor of the arena; beating her pays a Resplendent Spark (Blizzard, patch notes 2.0). In Season 8 she was one of the 24 bosses whose Boss Powers you could claim.

Echo of Mephisto is Lord of Hatred's pinnacle: a three-stage fight against Mephisto himself; Blizzard's patch notes name a Mephisto Key and a Mephisto's Hoard chest for it. It went into the Party Finder with patch 3.0.1, its mid-fight cutscene became skippable in 3.1.0 (Jun 30, 2026), and party members who join late can take a portal to the third stage (Blizzard, 3.1 patch notes). Since patch 3.2.1 (Sep 15, 2026) it gives better loot including a guaranteed Mythic drop (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). It is a separate fight from Echoing Hatred, the endless wave mode.

Seasonal bosses

Almost every season adds a boss, and many stay. Season 3 ended at Malphas in the Loom, Season 9 brought Astaroth back as the Exalted end of Escalating Nightmares, and Season 10 left Bartuc, Lord of Chaos, in Infernal Hordes for good. Season 11 sent the Lesser Evils into the endgame modes (Duriel in Helltide, Belial in the Pit, Andariel in the Kurast Undercity), and Season 14 added a seasonal Lair Boss, the Corrupted Reaper, at the Pandemonium Threshold in Zarbinzet (Blizzard, Jun 23, 2026). Season of Hell's Legacy goes furthest: its designers say in this clip that they made 20 new bosses and 25 new monsters from the older games, naming Blood Raven, Queen Araneae, Archbishop Lazarus, the Summoner, Nihlathak and the Maggot Queen, fought in Waking Nightmares (Blizzard's recap says "nearly twenty").

Season 15's questline ends with three Prime Evils. As Blizzard told the BlizzCon 2026 audience in this clip, Deckard Cain leads you back to Tristram Cathedral, the Worldstone Chamber and the Durance of Hate to fight echoes of Diablo, Baal and Mephisto and take a Splinter of Evil from each. The largest Waking Nightmares return as Capstone dungeons and, at Torment 10 and above, as Pinnacle Capstones (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Baal's Splinter of Destruction also changes Lair Bosses for those who carry it.

The Splinters have a price. The developers explain here that bearing one means echoes of its Prime Evil come back to hunt you, and that the ambush bosses players met on the test server were placeholders for exactly that. Blizzard's season post puts it plainly: "what you hunt will stalk you in return."

Frequently asked questions

How do you summon Duriel in Diablo 4? You no longer summon Duriel or any other Lair Boss in Diablo 4: since Season 8 the fight is free at Torment I or higher, and you spend 3 Shard of Agony keys to open Duriel's Hoard after the kill.

What are Lair Boss Keys in Diablo 4? Lair Boss Keys are boss-specific items, such as Living Steel for Grigoire or Betrayer's Husk for Belial, that open a Lair Boss's Hoard of loot in Diablo 4. Initiate bosses took 12 keys, Greater bosses 3 and Belial 2 when Blizzard set the system up in Season 8.

What is the hardest boss in Diablo 4? Blizzard does not rank them, but its own tiers put Belial (the only Exalted Lair Boss) above the others, and the level 200 Tormented bosses, Echo of Mephisto and Season 15's Pinnacle Capstones (Torment 10 and above) are the toughest fights in Diablo 4 as of Oct 20, 2026.

Which Diablo 4 bosses drop Mythic Uniques? Every Lair Boss in Diablo 4 can drop Mythic Uniques from its own pool, Echo of Mephisto guarantees one since patch 3.2.1 (Sep 15, 2026), and any Ancestral Unique anywhere has a very rare chance to be Mythic.

Where is Belial in Diablo 4? Belial, Lord of Lies, the Exalted Lair Boss of Diablo 4, appears as an ambush after you defeat another Lair Boss at Torment I or higher, and his Hoard takes 2 Betrayer's Husks.

Is the Butcher a boss in Diablo 4? Yes: the Butcher still ambushes players across Diablo 4 and has been a permanent Lair Boss since Season of Slaughter (Mar 11, 2026), with five Uniques of his own.

Do I need an expansion to fight every Diablo 4 boss? Urivar and the Harbinger of Hatred need Vessel of Hatred, and Echo of Mephisto needs Lord of Hatred; the other Lair Bosses and Echo of Lilith are in the Diablo 4 base game.
