Necromancer

The Necromancer is one of Diablo 4's five base-game classes, a summoner who raises Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages and a Golem and spends Essence on Bone, Blood, Shadow and Darkness skills. Its class mechanic is the Book of the Dead, and since Lord of Hatred its summons are skills on the tree.

The Necromancer is one of the five classes of Diablo 4's base game (Jun 6, 2023), and the last one Blizzard revealed, on Jun 12, 2022, as "the fifth and final class available at launch". Blizzard describes Necromancers as "cunning summoners that conjure vengeful hordes of the undead", whose "Essence flows into three powerful bastions of Bone, Blood, or Shadow to bring low their enemies". The class mechanic is the Book of the Dead, which shapes three kinds of minions. With Lord of Hatred in April 2026 the class changed more than most: Blizzard's overview of the expansion promised new options for "every single skill across the entire tree", calling it "a major disruption to the current class system", and the Necromancer's summoning moved out of the Book and into the skill tree. The other classes are compared on Classes.

Play style

The Necromancer fights alongside the dead. PC Gamer called the class "Diablo 4's version of a Pokémon trainer except the Pokémon are skeletons and other undead horrors". A Necromancer can lean on an army of minions, or sacrifice them and fight alone with Bone Spear, Bone Spirit, Blood Lance, Blood Surge, Blight, Sever and Corpse Explosion, Curses such as Decrepify and Iron Maiden, and defenses like Blood Mist and Bone Prison, all named in Blizzard's patch notes. Corpses left by dead enemies feed skills such as Corpse Explosion and Corpse Tendrils, and the Aspect of Fel Gluttony lets the Golem consume them to shorten its cooldown.

Intelligence raises his damage. On Sep 15, 2026 Blizzard raised each 10 points of Intelligence from 1.25% to 1.625% damage for the class.

The Book of the Dead and the minions

The Book of the Dead holds the Necromancer's three minion types: Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages and the Golem. Each type can be specialized with upgrades, or sacrificed so that the Necromancer gains a powerful bonus instead of the minion; Blizzard's Sacrificial Glyph rewards fighting with no minions at all, and Season 15 doubled its bonus from 10% to 20%.

Lord of Hatred moved the summoning itself into the skill tree. In Blizzard Watch's summary (Apr 27, 2026), the minion types are still chosen in the Book (Defenders or Warriors for Skeletal Warriors, for example), but summoning is now a skill with its own upgrades, and minions can be directed at a target "like Diablo 3 Necros". Blizzard Watch's editor-in-chief ended its review period with 28 summoned pets. Season 15 fixed commanding Skeleton Warriors and Golems, which could fail to switch the minion's target.

Ultimates

The Necromancer has four Ultimates. Army of the Dead, Bone Storm and Blood Wave were in the launch game; Vessel of Hatred's 2.0 update (Oct 2024) added Soulrift, a Darkness Ultimate that corrupts nearby enemies for eight seconds and rips out their souls for Essence and a Barrier. In Season 15, Army of the Dead can be cast again while active, up to 5 times, each cast adding more Volatile Skeletons, and Soulrift's cooldown fell from 50 to 40 seconds because, Blizzard wrote, it "has also lacked an identity".

The Lord of Hatred skill tree

IGN's review of Lord of Hatred describes what the rework did to the six existing classes: the "highly attractive passive perks" that simply added damage or toughness are gone, replaced by "more meaningful choices", and a skill can now take up to 15 points instead of five. Blizzard's notes count over 40 reworked choices and 80 new options per class, with up to 83 Skill Points. Necromancer variants named in Blizzard's notes include Blight's Piercing Darkness and Whirlpool, Blood Wave's Path of Darkness and Hematolagnia, Bone Prison's Plunging Darkness, Sever's Reaping Lotus, Bone Storm's Roll the Bones and Soulrift's Soul Vortex.

Necromancer and Warlock

Lord of Hatred's Warlock gave the Necromancer company. IGN's reviewer calls the Warlock's Legion options "Necromancer-like", "all about summoning demons to do your fighting for you", and Blizzard Watch described the Warlock as "combining Sorcerer and Necromancer into one class". The Necromancer remains the class built around the undead and corpses; the Warlock binds demons.

Paragon, items and Talismans

Necromancer Paragon Glyphs named in Blizzard's Season 15 notes include Blood-drinker, Exhumation and Sacrificial, and the Blood Begets Blood Legendary node. Necromancer Uniques there include Ebonpiercer, The Unmaker, Red Blessing, Deathless Visage, Hangman's Hand, Will of Rathma, Undercrown and the Mortacrux. Of Season 15's legacy Uniques, the Necromancer can use Henri's Perquisition, In-Geom, The Furnace and Messerschmidt's Reaver. Lord of Hatred's Talisman (see Crafting) added sets such as Rathma's Waking Touch (summoning), Peace of the Black Shroud, Radamant's Desecration and Word of the Blood Binder (Blood skills).

Season of Hell's Legacy changes

Blizzard's Season 15 notes say the Necromancer's top builds "have revolved around Blood Wave's and Bone Spirit's Core skill variants, meaning many of their other Core skills underperformed", so the season raised the others: Blood Lance and Bone Spear from 130% to 160% damage, Blood Surge's nova from 100% to 125%, and Corpse Explosion from 110% to 180%, because Corpse Explosion builds "have not been close to the meta recently". Rathma's Waking Touch was reworked to support summoning builds in general rather than only Army of the Dead, and the Red Blessing and Banished Lord's Talisman were changed so that Overpower is generated and spent instead of stacked.

Builds

Vi.ki does not rank builds. Builds named by reputable, dated sources are collected on Builds; Blizzard Watch pointed Necromancer players to the summoning rework at Lord of Hatred's launch (Apr 27, 2026). Blizzard's own notes say Blood Wave and Bone Spirit variants led the class before Season 15. The Leveling Guide covers reaching level 70.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Necromancer good for beginners in Diablo 4? A minion Necromancer lets the army do much of the fighting, which keeps the player out of harm's way while learning. Managing corpses, Curses and the Book of the Dead adds depth later.

What is the Necromancer's resource in Diablo 4? Essence, spent on Bone, Blood, Shadow and Darkness skills.

What is the Necromancer's class mechanic in Diablo 4? The Book of the Dead, which upgrades or sacrifices the three minion types: Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages and the Golem. Since Lord of Hatred the summoning skills themselves are on the skill tree.

What are the Necromancer's Ultimates in Diablo 4? Army of the Dead, Bone Storm, Blood Wave and Soulrift, the last added in the 2.0 update of Oct 2024.

What is the best Necromancer build in Diablo 4? Blizzard does not name one. Its Season of Hell's Legacy notes said Blood Wave and Bone Spirit builds had led the class, and buffed Blood Lance, Bone Spear, Blood Surge and Corpse Explosion to catch up.

How many minions can a Necromancer have in Diablo 4? It depends on the build: Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages and a Golem, plus items such as Undercrown that raise the Skeleton Warrior limit. Blizzard Watch's editor-in-chief reached 28 summoned pets during Lord of Hatred's review period.

Who voices the Necromancer in Diablo 4? Elle Newlands voices the female Necromancer and Jesse Burch the male, according to PCGamesN's cast list (Jun 6, 2023).
