World Bosses
Diablo 4's world bosses are giant open-world fights that spawn on a schedule, every 3.5 hours since patch 1.2.0 (Oct 17, 2023), with warnings an hour and 15 minutes ahead. Ashava, Avarice and Wandering Death have been in the rotation since launch, and Azmodan joined permanently in Season 11 (Dec 11, 2025).
Diablo 4's world bosses are giant demons that appear in the open world on a schedule, every 3.5 hours since patch 1.2.0 (Oct 17, 2023), for anyone nearby to fight together: Ashava, Avarice the Gold Cursed and Wandering Death have been in the rotation since launch, and Azmodan, the Lord of Sin, became the first new one in Season 11 (Blizzard, Dec 3, 2025). This clip is from Blizzard's trailer for that season: after the card "As the Lesser Evils invade", a huge horned red demon with a swollen belly towers over a snowy field. World bosses are part of the base game, need no key or summon, and are open to every character on both realms; the rest of the Endgame has its own bosses, covered on Bosses.

How the schedule works
At launch a world boss came every 6 hours with a 30-minute warning. Patch 1.2.0, which arrived with Season of Blood and Diablo 4's Steam release on Oct 17, 2023, cut the wait to 3.5 hours, moved the first warning to an hour before the spawn, added a second warning 15 minutes before, raised the bosses' health and damage, and "significantly increased" the quality of their rewards (Blizzard, patch notes 1.2.0). An in-game announcement tells you when the next one is coming, and the fight takes place out in one of Sanctuary's Regions rather than in a dungeon.
This page has no live countdown. Blizzard publishes no world boss calendar; the in-game announcement is its only notice. A world boss cannot be summoned early or delayed by players, and a boss that starts to escape becomes immune two seconds later, so a group that runs out of time loses the fight.
The bosses
- Ashava, one of the three in the rotation at launch, whose Season 8 Boss Power was a Poison Breath.
- Avarice, the Gold Cursed, whose loot comes in Avarice's chest (Blizzard's 1.x notes once fixed Gems dropping from it).
- Wandering Death is the towering creature of wood and bone in Blizzard's launch press images, with four long clawed arms and a glowing core.
- Azmodan, the Lord of Sin and one of the Lesser Evils, came with Season of Divine Intervention (Dec 11, 2025). Blizzard calls him "our first new world boss": he joins the rotation "amongst his other gargantuan cohorts", is "a permanent world boss across both Seasonal and Eternal realms", fights with "devastating magma and thunderous earthquakes", and was given better resistances so strong characters cannot kill him in one hit (Blizzard, Dec 3, 2025). In that season he could also be summoned near Zarbinzet in Hawezar, at Summoning Altars that gave him a power from one of the other Lesser Evils, and his fight was added to the Party Finder.
Prima Games named the launch three (Prima Games), and Blizzard's own Season 8 post lists Wandering Death, Ashava and Avarice the Gold Cursed among its world bosses (Blizzard, Apr 21, 2025). Blizzard has not published a full current roster.
Rewards
A world boss pays its loot to everyone who took part, and the first kill each week also pays a weekly cache, which Blizzard made openable at any level in the 1.x patches. Since Season 8, world bosses drop more Exquisite Blood, the key to Lord Zir's Hoard, and in that season each world boss gave a Boss Power (Ashava's Poison Breath, Avarice's Explosive Ore and Wandering Death's Chest Beam among them) (Blizzard, Apr 21, 2025). Seasons have added their own: in Season 11, Azmodan's Divine Gifts made world bosses pay Activity Keys or Lair Boss Keys, and a Season Blessing, the Urn of Calamity, added extra gear from world bosses.
Event bosses
Blizzard sometimes swaps the world boss for a joke. Until Sep 14, 2026, "the global World Boss" was "taken over by Moophisto", a cow version of Mephisto, for the Divine Bovine Community Challenge: if players beat him 300,000 times together, every player would get the Moomento Mori Mount Trophy in Season of Hell's Legacy (Blizzard, Sep 2026).
