Barbarian
The Barbarian is one of Diablo 4's five base-game classes, a melee fighter who spends Fury and carries four weapons at once through his class mechanic, the Arsenal. His Ultimates are Call of the Ancients, Wrath of the Berserker and Iron Maelstrom.
The Barbarian is one of the five classes of Diablo 4's base game (Jun 6, 2023), a melee warrior who, in Blizzard's words, "has unparalleled strength and expertly wields an entire arsenal in battle, with a weapon for every occasion". He spends Fury, carries four weapons at once through his class mechanic, the Arsenal, and "bellows intimidating war cries and unleashes ground-shaking slams to send approaching hordes reeling". Like every class he got a rebuilt skill tree with Lord of Hatred in April 2026; as Blizzard's Lord of Hatred overview says, "we're not leaving any class behind", and the new tree is available to all players whether or not they own the expansion. The other classes are compared on Classes.

Play style
The Barbarian fights at close range and hits hard: he builds Fury with Basic attacks, spends it on skills such as Whirlwind and Hammer of the Ancients, and shouts, leaps and slams to control a crowd. PC Gamer recommended him in March 2023 to players "that hunger for maximum damage". Strength raises his damage; since Sep 15, 2026 each 10 points of Strength add 0.8% damage, down from 1.1%. He is a sturdy first character for new players, because he stands in the middle of the fight rather than having to keep monsters at a distance; the Beginner's Guide covers the first hours.
The Arsenal and Weapon Expertise
The Arsenal lets the Barbarian equip four weapons at once: a two-handed bludgeoning weapon, a two-handed slashing weapon, and a main-hand and off-hand pair for dual wielding. Each skill is assigned to one weapon and uses that weapon's damage, while the other stats of all four stay active. Each weapon type, or Expertise, gives a bonus when it is assigned to a skill, and Expertise ranks rise from 1 to 10 as the Barbarian kills with it, adding a second bonus at the top rank. PC Gamer also noted a "technique slot" for one more Expertise bonus.
Expertise is still part of balance. In the Season of Hell's Legacy notes (Sep 12, 2026), Blizzard cut the Two-Handed Sword Expertise's Bleeding bonus from 30% to 15% and fixed the Rank 10 bonus of Polearm Expertise and the damage bonus of Two-Handed Axe Expertise.
Skills and Ultimates
The Barbarian's best-known skills are Whirlwind, Hammer of the Ancients, Leap, Upheaval, Charge, Rend, Death Blow, Steel Grasp, Kick, Iron Skin and his shouts (Rallying Cry, War Cry, Challenging Shout), all named in Blizzard's patch notes. Earthquake builds were strong enough in 2025 that Blizzard toned them down in patch 2.2 "to make room for more Barbarian builds".
His Ultimates are Call of the Ancients, which summons the Ancients to fight beside him, Wrath of the Berserker and Iron Maelstrom. Vessel of Hatred's 2.0 update (Oct 2024) gave every class one new skill; the Barbarian's was Mighty Throw, a Weapon Mastery skill that hurls his weapon, sticks it in the ground and makes it pulse damage for four seconds.
The Lord of Hatred skill tree
At the Diablo 30th Anniversary Spotlight (Feb 11, 2026), Blizzard admitted the joke that the old trees were "more like skill twigs" and promised a "completely overhauled, massively expanded skill tree system" for every player with Lord of Hatred. The rework removed passive nodes and gave each active skill three branches, the third holding Bonus Skill Variants for expansion owners. For the Barbarian, the variants include Whirlwind's "Winding", Charge's "Battering Ram", Iron Skin's "Juggernaut", Lunging Strike's "Impaling" and Rallying Cry's "Madawc", all named in Blizzard's 3.0 and Season of Hell's Legacy notes.
Blizzard Watch's pick for the class at Lord of Hatred's launch was Whirlwind's "Winding" variant (Apr 27, 2026): attacking with other skills builds up to 20 stacks, each adding 1% damage and movement speed to Whirlwind, and while any stacks remain the Barbarian launches Iron Shrapnel that pierces and makes enemies bleed. "Do you want to spin around launching shrapnel from your body?", the site asked.
Paragon, items and Talismans
The Barbarian's Paragon Glyphs and Legendary nodes named in Blizzard's Season of Hell's Legacy notes include the Disembowel and Crusher Glyphs and the Hemorrhage, Blood Rage and Flawless Technique Legendary nodes; patch 3.0 also fixed the Bone Breaker Legendary node, which granted more damage than intended.
Barbarian Uniques in the same notes include the Ring of the Ravenous, the Ring of Red Furor, Nomad's Longing Heart, Ramaladni's Magnum Opus, Rage of Harrogath, Wyrdskin, the Ugly Bastard Helm and the Mantle of Mountain's Fury. Of Season 15's nine legacy Uniques, the Barbarian can wield Arioc's Needle, In-Geom, The Furnace and Messerschmidt's Reaver, the axe "said to have been borne by Prince Aidan himself when he first drove back Diablo", as well as the four legacy Uniques for every class. Lord of Hatred's Talisman added Barbarian sets such as Bul'Kathos' Pride and Sescheron's Fury (see Crafting).
Season of Hell's Legacy changes
Blizzard's notes for Season 15, which began Sep 15, 2026, open the Barbarian section bluntly: "Barbarians have been strong for the past couple seasons, so we're going to adjust the class while improving some Core skills." Rallying Cry's Madawc variant and the Madawc damage of Call of the Ancients were halved (200% to 100% and 240% to 120%), the Disembowel and Crusher Glyphs fell from 20% to 15%, and the Writhing and Battle-Mad Aspects lost damage. In return, the Ring of Red Furor's guaranteed Critical Strike now needs 30 Fury instead of 100, Raid Leader's Aspect also grants damage reduction, and a long list of Barbarian bugs was fixed.
The season also brought Rebirth, and the Barbarian was the example. At BlizzCon's "What's Next" panel on Sep 13, 2026, a developer said he had been "sitting on Barb the Barb since the beginning of D4", and that Rebirth lets that old character live on in the Seasonal Realm. Rebirth turns an Eternal character into a Seasonal one at level 1, keeping its class, name and appearance (see Season of Hell's Legacy).
Builds
Vi.ki does not rank builds. Builds named by reputable, dated sources are collected on Builds: for the Barbarian, Blizzard Watch's Winding Whirlwind (Apr 27, 2026). Blizzard's own notes show which Barbarian builds it judged too strong: Earthquake in patch 2.2 (2025), and the Madawc builds of Rallying Cry and Call of the Ancients in Season 15. The Leveling Guide covers reaching level 70.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Barbarian good for beginners in Diablo 4? The Barbarian is a straightforward melee class: he stands in the fight, builds Fury with Basic attacks and spends it on big Core skills. The Arsenal asks players to manage four weapons, which mostly matters later, when choosing which weapon each skill uses.
What is the Barbarian's resource in Diablo 4? Fury. Basic skills generate it, and skills such as Whirlwind and Hammer of the Ancients spend it.
What is the Barbarian's class mechanic in Diablo 4? The Arsenal: the Barbarian equips four weapons at once, ties each skill to one of them, and earns Weapon Expertise bonuses that rank up from 1 to 10.
What are the Barbarian's Ultimates in Diablo 4? Call of the Ancients, Wrath of the Berserker and Iron Maelstrom.
What is the best Barbarian build in Diablo 4? Blizzard does not name one, and balance changes every season. Blizzard Watch recommended Whirlwind's "Winding" variant at Lord of Hatred's launch (Apr 27, 2026), and Blizzard toned the class down in Season of Hell's Legacy after it had been strong for several seasons.
Was the Barbarian nerfed in Season 15? Yes. Blizzard's Season of Hell's Legacy notes (Sep 12, 2026) reduced the Barbarian's damage per Strength point from 1.1% to 0.8%, halved the Madawc variants and cut several Glyphs and Aspects, while buffing some Core skills and Uniques.
Who voices the Barbarian in Diablo 4? Laila Berzins voices the female Barbarian and Ray Chase the male, according to PCGamesN's cast list (Jun 6, 2023).
