Leveling Guide
Diablo 4's level cap is 70 for every player since Lord of Hatred's launch on Apr 27, 2026, up from 60 with Vessel of Hatred and 50 at launch; after 70, Paragon points keep a character growing. The fastest experience comes from higher difficulties, whose Torment bonuses reach 1,700% at Torment XII, and from War Plans and the Pit.
Diablo 4's level cap is 70, for every player whether or not they own an expansion, since Season of Reckoning and Lord of Hatred arrived on Apr 27, 2026; it was 60 from Vessel of Hatred (Oct 2024) and 50 at launch (Jun 2023). Levels give Skill Points, and since Lord of Hatred's skill tree rework a skill can take many more of them: IGN's review notes you can now sink "up to 15 points" into a skill, "versus the previous five", so once you have picked and modified your skills, most of the rest of leveling is deciding which ones to put points into. After 70 the climb continues through Paragon. Experience comes fastest from playing on the highest difficulty you can handle, because Torment levels multiply it, and from endgame activities such as War Plans and the Pit. New to the game? Level cap history
- Launch, Jun 2023: 50. Paragon unlocked at level 50, and from there characters earned Paragon points rather than new skills (Blizzard, Sep 19, 2022). After complaints about patch 1.1.0, Blizzard promised faster leveling from 50 to 100 in patch 1.1.1, which shipped on Aug 8, 2023 (Blizzard, Jul 21, 2023).
- Vessel of Hatred, Oct 7, 2024: 60. The cap rose to 60 for everyone; characters above 50 were set back to 50 and their Paragon converted, and Paragon points were capped at 300 from leveling (Blizzard, Aug 29, 2024).
- Lord of Hatred, Apr 27, 2026: 70. "The Level Cap increases to 70 for all Diablo IV players beginning with Season of Reckoning", while Torment levels expanded "from 4 to 12" (Blizzard, Apr 23, 2026).
Blizzard's pages read for this guide do not say whether Paragon now begins at 60 or at 70, or whether the 300-point cap changed (Oct 20, 2026).
What raises experience
Difficulty. This is the biggest lever. Normal and Hard are open from the start, and since patch 3.2.1 Expert and Penitent unlock as soon as you finish the Prologue instead of the whole campaign (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Monsters scale to your difficulty, and each Torment level adds bonus experience: the same patch raised Torment X from 1,200% to 1,300%, Torment XI from 1,300% to 1,500% and Torment XII from 1,400% to 1,700%. Play on the highest difficulty where you still kill quickly and rarely die; a slower kill on a higher tier is not always faster overall. How to unlock each tier is on Difficulty and Torment.
IGN's reviewer welcomes the "12 tiers of end-game difficulty, up from just four previously", which gives "plenty of runway" for pushing builds; for leveling, it means there is almost always a harder tier with a bigger experience bonus.
The Pit. The Pit of the Artificers rewards bonus experience by tier: patch 3.2.1 raised Pit Tier 150's bonus from 1,800% to 2,700% and doubled the experience from Progress Orbs while the Choron's Soul Pit War Plans node is active (The Pit).
War Plans. With Lord of Hatred, War Plans chain endgame activities into a playlist, and IGN's reviewer notes the best part: you "can now teleport to the next activity on your playlist in a matter of seconds" instead of hunting for keys or walking to events. Patch 3.2.1 increased War Plans experience rewards, which "scale heavily with Torment levels": every completed node in Torment X and higher now gives at least four Experience Orbs instead of two, and Experience reward nodes give twice as many.
Whispers and the Undercity. The same patch raised the Experience Orbs in Whisper Caches from 3 to 5 to 4 to 6, with two to four more in Torment X and higher, and doubled the orbs from the Undercity's Jade Epiphany node. It cut the orbs from some Helltide monsters.
Events. Blizzard sometimes runs experience events. For the third anniversary, "Mother's Blessing" granted "increased multiplicative XP" on both realms from Jun 2, 2026 at 10 a.m. PDT during the event week of Jun 2 to Jun 9. Watch Blizzard's news feed for the next one.
Season Rank. On the Seasonal Realm, Season Rank rewards add account-wide points rather than experience: up to 14 Skill Points and 42 Paragon points in Season of Hell's Legacy, so a season's later characters reach full strength sooner.
Skill points as you level
Leveling feels different since Apr 27, 2026. In Blizzard's Lord of Hatred overview, the narrator says the new trees give "meaningful choices and options in your skill tree from the moment you choose your first skills", with "No more waiting for random item drops or late game progression to really flesh out your build". Each active skill has three branches that open as you level, and passive nodes are gone (Blizzard, Apr 23, 2026). Patch 3.2.1 also lets every Unique item drop from level 1 on any difficulty, so build-defining items can show up while you level.
Skipping the campaign
The campaign is the slowest way to level a second character. Finishing it once unlocks "Skip Campaign" for every other character on either realm, and after the Lord of Hatred campaign a new character can start at "Story complete: Endgame", where "you'll be able to access endgame content and choose how to level your character" (Blizzard, Apr 23, 2026). Skipping is permanent for that character (patch 3.0.2, May 13, 2026). On a first character there is no skip, but you can start in an expansion's campaign instead of the base game's (Beginner's Guide).
Mounts
A mount speeds up every trip between dungeons and events. You unlock it through the quest "A Trusty Steed", and mounts are account-wide progress, so later characters have one from the start (Blizzard, Aug 29, 2024). Vessel of Hatred added war-cats, and Lord of Hatred's Deluxe and Ultimate editions add the Skartaran Basilisk.
After level 70: Paragon
Reaching 70 is the start of the second climb. Paragon points go into boards of nodes and Glyphs; you can equip five boards, Glyphs level up in the Pit, and Paragon is shared by every character on a realm (Blizzard, Aug 29, 2024). The same experience sources keep paying off, with Torment bonuses and Pit tiers doing most of the work (Paragon).
Not sure which Torment level your character can take? IGN's reviewer found Echoing Hatred, Lord of Hatred's endless-wave event, "pretty useful as a way of gauging" which tier a build is ready for: it starts at the lowest tier and climbs as you survive waves, though it needs a rare Trace of Echoes to enter (Echoing Hatred).
Rebirth and new seasons
Every season starts at level 1. Since Sep 15, 2026, Rebirth takes an Eternal character back to level 1 on the Seasonal Realm, keeping its class, name and appearance (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026).
At BlizzCon 2026, a developer on the "What's Next" panel called Rebirth long requested: his Barbarian from launch, "Barb the Barb", can now start each season over instead of being deleted for a free slot.
Leveling a second character is also easier since Season 15: War Plans progress is now shared by all of your characters in the same partition, so, as the panel put it, you can make progress "and not have to start over with a new character" (Season of Hell's Legacy).
Leveling routes and builds
Blizzard does not publish leveling routes or builds. Its season post sends players to community guide sites, Maxroll, Icy Veins, PureDiablo, Mobalytics and D4Builds, for "early-game leveling to endgame builds" (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Their recommendations change with every patch, so check the date on any route you follow. Builds named by reputable, dated sources are collected on Builds.
Frequently asked questions
What is the max level in Diablo 4? Diablo 4's max level is 70 for all players since Apr 27, 2026, when Lord of Hatred and Season of Reckoning launched; after that, characters keep growing through Paragon points.
How long does it take to reach level 70 in Diablo 4? Blizzard gives no figure, and it depends on difficulty, class and activities. Playing on higher Torment levels, running War Plans and the Pit, and skipping the campaign on later characters are the fastest ways.
Does level carry over between Diablo 4 seasons? No. Every Diablo 4 season starts at level 1, but your Seasonal character keeps its level when it moves to the Eternal Realm at the season's end, and Season Rank grants account-wide Skill and Paragon points during the season.
What gives the most XP in Diablo 4? The Torment difficulty bonus does: since Sep 15, 2026 it reaches 1,700% at Torment XII, and high Pit tiers add their own bonus, 2,700% at Pit Tier 150.
Was the Diablo 4 level cap ever 100? At launch, Diablo 4 characters earned Paragon from level 50, and Blizzard spoke of leveling from 50 to 100 when it sped that stretch up in patch 1.1.1 (Aug 8, 2023). Since Vessel of Hatred the character level stops at the cap, now 70, and Paragon is counted separately.
Do I need Lord of Hatred for level 70 in Diablo 4? No. The level 70 cap and the 12 Torment levels came to every Diablo 4 player with the Apr 27, 2026 update; War Plans and Echoing Hatred do need the expansion.

ParagonParagon is Diablo 4's progression after the level cap: points spent on boards of stat nodes with Glyph sockets. Since Vessel of Hatred (patch 2.0, Oct 2024) Paragon is shared by all your characters on a realm, with up to 300 points from leveling, five boards equipped and Glyphs leveled to 100 in the Pit. -
War PlansWar Plans are Lord of Hatred's endgame system: at the Command Table in Temis you chain up to five activities from six modes (the Pit, Infernal Hordes, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Bosses and the Kurast Undercity), claim rewards from the War Chest and level a modifier tree for each activity. Since Season of Hell's Legacy (Sep 15, 2026), War Plans progress is shared by your characters in the same partition. -
Beginner's GuideA new Diablo 4 player in 2026 picks one of eight classes, plays the campaign (or skips to an expansion, or to the endgame once a campaign is done), reaches the level cap of 70, then climbs Torment difficulties through War Plans, the Pit and the other endgame activities. The Seasonal Realm gives a fresh start every season; the Eternal Realm keeps your characters for good. -
Difficulty and TormentDiablo 4 has four standard difficulties (Normal, Hard, Expert and Penitent) and twelve Torment levels, Torment I to XII, since Lord of Hatred (Apr 27, 2026), up from Torment I to IV in Vessel of Hatred's patch 2.0; the original World Tiers were retired in Oct 2024. Torment levels unlock by clearing Pit tiers and give more gold, experience and better drops. -
The PitThe Pit of the Artificers is Diablo 4's timed, tiered endgame dungeon, added in Season 4 (May 14, 2024) and permanent: spend Runeshards at the Artificer's Obelisk, kill enough monsters to summon the boss before the 10-minute timer runs out, and earn Masterworking materials and Glyph upgrades. Its tiers unlock Torment levels, and the Artificer's Tower beside it holds the seasonal leaderboards. -
Echoing HatredEchoing Hatred is Lord of Hatred's endless wave activity in Diablo 4: offer a rare Trace of Echoes to the Sightless Eye in Temis to fight escalating waves of random monsters and several bosses at once, with better loot the longer you last. It has been capped at 150 waves since patch 3.1.0 (Jun 30, 2026).
