Season of Hell's Legacy
Season of Hell's Legacy is Diablo 4's 15th season and its 30th anniversary celebration, live since Sep 15, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. PT (patch 3.2.1, now 3.2.3). Deckard Cain returns, players defeat echoes of Diablo, Baal and Mephisto and bear one Splinter of Evil, and Blizzard has not announced an end date as of Oct 20, 2026.
Season of Hell's Legacy is Diablo 4's 15th season, live on every platform since Sep 15, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. PT with patch 3.2.1, and it is Blizzard's "centerpiece" for Diablo's 30th anniversary. At the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on Sep 12, Blizzard announced that it would launch "Tuesday, September 15th": as the dead return from Pandemonium, Deckard Cain finds his way back to Sanctuary and leads players into Waking Nightmares at Tristram Cathedral, the Worldstone Chamber and the Durance of Hate. Players defeat echoes of the three Prime Evils, then choose one Splinter of Evil to bear for the rest of the season. Nine "legacy" Uniques from older Diablo games, the Stone of Jordan among them, join the game permanently. The season runs on patch 3.2.3 since Oct 14, 2026, and Blizzard has not announced when it ends, as of Oct 20, 2026. How seasons work in general is on Seasons.

How to start
Make a new Seasonal character, or use Rebirth to bring an Eternal one into the season at level 1. If you have finished the campaign once on any character, you can skip it (Blizzard, Apr 23, 2026). The seasonal questline starts with Deckard Cain; Blizzard's 3.2.1 notes say Waking Nightmare portals no longer appear during the Prologue. Players who skip ahead should know about one bug: until patch 3.2.3, a character could use a Splinter of a Prime Evil before finishing the questline and then could never finish it. Blizzard's fix does not repair characters already stuck; it says to make a new character in the same partition and finish the questline there, which unlocks the Prime Evil Powers for every character in that partition (Blizzard, Oct 14, 2026).
The questline: Deckard Cain and the dark wanderers
The story picks up from Season of Death Awakening: the Death Cult's rituals are pulling souls lost in time back into Sanctuary. One of them is Deckard Cain, the last of the Horadrim. At the BlizzCon "What's Next" panel, Live Service Design Director Dan Tanguay says Cain is neither a ghost nor a construct but a returned soul "on borrowed time", who thinks it is still the year he died; three dark wanderers came back too, and Cain asks you to redeem their lost souls. Akara advises along the way; in Blizzard's season post she says there is "only one Horadrim sage" who can help. Following the dark wanderers means walking through their nightmares, the largest Waking Nightmares, to defeat echoes of Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral, Baal at Arreat Summit and Mephisto in the Durance of Hate (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026).
Splinters of Evil: which Prime Evil to bear
Each defeated echo leaves a Splinter of Evil. Once you hold all three, you "decide which evil you would want to embrace", as the opening ceremony put it, a choice that unlocks new powers and reshapes the season around you. Bearing a Splinter makes you a dark wanderer yourself.
On the panel, the developers compare a Splinter to an echo of a soulstone. Taking Baal's Splinter of Destruction, for example, gives you Baal's signature power, which you can upgrade, and it also lets you upgrade War Plans and modify activities, so that each Splinter plays differently. Blizzard's season post spells out the three choices (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026):
| Splinter | Iconic Power damage | Activities it modifies |
|---|---|---|
| Diablo's Splinter of Terror | Fire | Helltide and Infernal Hordes |
| Baal's Splinter of Destruction | Cold | The Undercity and Lair Bosses |
| Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred | Physical | The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons |
All three also modify the Tree of Whispers. Each reputation track holds eight activity modifiers and six upgrades to the Iconic Power, which erupts from you on its own during combat. Which one to take depends on the activities you play most: the Splinter you bear decides which of them gain its modifiers through War Plans. You bear one at a time. To switch, earn another Splinter from the largest Waking Nightmares; Blizzard's panel recap calls it "a rare resource" from the most difficult of them (Blizzard, Sep 13, 2026).
The power has a price. A Splinter makes you more vulnerable to its Prime Evil, and in Blizzard's words "what you hunt will stalk you in return". On the panel, the developers explain that echoes of the Prime Evils may come back to attack you for trying to profit from their power; the ambush bosses seen on the test server were placeholders for them. Then come Soul Splinters, socketable artifacts like Diablo 3's soul shards, with big buffs that also carry the risk of being hunted.
Soul Splinters
Soul Splinters are the season's special gems. Each is tied to a demon or artifact, gives "a powerful boon" and carries a liability, and you can equip up to three in your Jewelry slots. They drop as Magic, Rare, Legendary or Unique, and the Horadric Cube's Amalgamation recipe combines Soul Splinters of the same type and rarity into the next rarity. There are eight:
| Soul Splinter | Tied to |
|---|---|
| Splinter of Anguish | Andariel |
| Splinter of Sin | Azmodan |
| Splinter of Lies | Belial |
| Splinter of the Black Soulstone | The Black Soulstone |
| Splinter of Pain | Duriel |
| Splinter of the Mother | Lilith |
| Splinter of Hellfire | Na-Krul |
| Splinter of Damnation | Skarn |
Blizzard has not published each Soul Splinter's exact numbers in its season post; its 3.2.1 fixes mention that the Splinter of the Mother grants Unhindered and stacks, the Splinter of Lies applies Vulnerable, and the Splinter of Pain can reduce movement speed.
Waking Nightmares
Waking Nightmares are memories of Diablo's past rebuilt in Diablo 4's style. On the panel, Lead Encounter Designer Owen Leach, the season's lead, describes the largest kind, the Prime Evil nightmares you play in the questline: one recreates Diablo 2's fifth act, from the Ancients' Way to Arreat Summit, the Ancients, the Worldstone Keep and the waves before Baal; another rebuilds the end of Diablo 2's third act, from Travincal and Khalim's Will to Mephisto in the Durance of Hate; the third recreates almost all of the first Diablo, from Tristram Cathedral down through the catacombs and caves into Hell to fight Diablo.
There are three sizes (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026):
- The largest: multi-level, Capstone-type dungeons of the showdowns with the Prime Evils. You meet them in the questline and can replay them on Torment for rewards at a fixed difficulty, or as Pinnacle Capstones at Torment X and higher.
- Dungeon-sized: about ten fixed dungeons in the open world that work like normal dungeons and take Nightmare Dungeon keys, Owen Leach says. Blizzard names the Den of Evil from Diablo 2; the panel also shows Tal Rasha's Tomb from Diablo 2, the Halls of the Blind from the first Diablo, and the fall of Caldeum from Diablo 3, fought beside Leah.
- Pop-up: single-room encounters that open suddenly in the overworld, such as the giant spider Queen Araneae or waves of Flayers. Owen Leach counts about 15 of these pop-up rifts.
The season brings back "nearly twenty bosses" (Blizzard, Sep 13, 2026). Owen Leach says the team made 20 new bosses and 25 new monsters for it and names Blood Raven, Queen Araneae, Archbishop Lazarus, the Summoner and Nihlathak, along with the Maggot Queen in the Maggot Lair. Friendly faces return as memories, from Pepin, Griswold and Adria of the first game to Tyrael, and the team imported their original voice lines and music. Patch notes since launch also name the Countess in the Forgotten Tower and a Sandstone Golem in the Horadric Library.
Legacy Uniques (permanent)
Nine legacy Uniques arrived with the season and are permanent on both the Seasonal and Eternal Realms. On the panel, the developers say they sit at the power of other Uniques but keep the affixes of the old items, so the Stone of Jordan does what players remember from Diablo 2, with tweaks where systems such as light radius do not exist; you also get their looks for transmog. Six of them can also be made into Unique Charms (Mythic Uniques and Crafting cover the systems).
| Unique | Slot | Classes |
|---|---|---|
| Leoric's Crown | Helm | All |
| Nemesis Bracers (also a Charm) | Gloves | All |
| Stone of Jordan (also a Charm) | Ring | All |
| Sirloin of the Bovine | Legs | All |
| Arioc's Needle (also a Charm) | Two-handed polearm | Barbarian, Druid, Spiritborn |
| Henri's Perquisition (also a Charm) | Off-hand focus | Sorcerer, Necromancer, Warlock |
| In-Geom (also a Charm) | One-handed sword | Barbarian, Druid, Rogue, Necromancer, Paladin, Sorcerer, Warlock |
| The Furnace (also a Charm) | Two-handed mace | Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Paladin, Warlock |
| Messerschmidt's Reaver | Two-handed axe | Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Paladin, Warlock |
Rebirth
Rebirth converts an Eternal character into a Seasonal one at level 1, keeping its class, name, appearance and Normal or Hardcore state, plus cosmetics saved in an ensemble; it keeps a running tally of hours across all of that character's Rebirths (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Empty the character first: the game will not allow Rebirth while anything is equipped or in the inventory, and items left behind are lost. On the panel a developer calls it a long-requested feature and jokes that his launch Barbarian, "Barb the Barb", can finally live on.
Mythic crafting and the Horadric Cube
After PTR feedback, Blizzard made Mythic crafting more predictable. The Horadric Cube's "Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic" turns a Unique into its Mythic version with every affix, temper and masterwork kept, instead of rerolling it. It costs more than the other routes, and its result carries a "Crafted" tag: only one Crafted item can be equipped, and only this recipe gives the tag. Mythics from the Jeweler's Rune Crafting or the Blacksmith's caches have no tag (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Iconic Mythics such as the Harlequin Crest stay Mythic-only: Blizzard dropped the PTR's Unique versions of them, and the Blacksmith now sells two Mythic caches, one for all class-usable Mythic Uniques and one for Iconic Mythics only. Unique Charms have a small chance to drop as Mythic Charms.
Two new Cube recipes give finer control. Affix Value Reroll rerolls the base affixes of equipment and Talisman items while protecting Greater Affixes, enchantments, tempers and transfigurations; Horadric Reroll fully randomizes the base affixes of Legendary or better Charms and Seals without touching set bonuses or Unique powers.
Shared War Plans
The developers on the panel say the team first planned this for Season 16 and moved it up: since Season 15, War Plans reputation is shared by every character on your account in the same partition (Seasonal or Eternal, Hardcore or not, Solo Self Found or not), and each character still spends the shared points on its own plans, as with Paragon points (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Season 14's War Plans progress carried over to Eternal at the changeover. For Hardcore players, only living characters transfer their points at a season's end, so Blizzard suggests keeping one living Hardcore character, even a level 1 "storage" character, in the partition.
Season Rank and rewards
Season Rank has nine ranks and 125 objectives, about 15% of which need Lord of Hatred, including objectives needed to finish Rank VIII and earn every reward. The ranks pay up to 14 Skill Points, up to 42 Paragon points, up to 10 Resplendent Sparks, five Mythic Unique Caches, the Dark Wanderbear pet, the Banner of the Three mount trophy, the title "Deckard's Confidant" and materials. Smoldering Ashes from objectives buy five Season Blessings, such as the Urn of Glyphs for extra Glyph upgrades and the Urn of Curiosities for a second item from the Purveyor of Curiosities. Season 15 also added a Spiritborn Paragon board, "Swarm of Storms".
The free Battle Pass Reliquary includes the Eidolon Mount, Eidolon's Barding and the Ancient Town Portal; for the first time the premium Armor Reliquary has a set made for each class. The Deluxe Battle Pass costs 2,800 Platinum and adds the Archangel of Justice armor, the Lordling of Terror pet and Wings of Justice; the Premium bundle costs 1,000 Platinum, 500 less than buying every premium Reliquary (Battle Pass and Shop). Watching two hours of Diablo 4 on Twitch between Sep 15 and Sep 29, 2026 earned the Deforestation two-handed axe cosmetic, and Xbox Game Pass members who link Battle.net can claim over 50 cosmetics.
Patches during the season
- 3.2.1 (Sep 15, 2026): the season's launch. Barbarians lost damage (their core stat bonus fell from 1.1% to 0.8% per 10 Strength) while Druids, Necromancers and Paladins gained; Legendary drop rates rose in Torment I to V; every Unique can now drop from level 1 on any difficulty; Expert and Penitent unlock after the Prologue (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026).
- 3.2.2 (Sep 30, 2026): fixed a questline block when entering the Worldstone Chamber portal too quickly, the Chamber of Bone giving no rewards, Nihlathak teleporting out of his arena and the Henri's Perquisition Charm recipe (Blizzard).
- 3.2.3 (Oct 14, 2026): fixed the Splinter-before-questline bug, Baal's loot being hard to reach where Tyrael appears, the Countess passing through her fog wall, and four affixes the Cube could not reroll (Blizzard).
Every patch is listed on Patch Notes.
When does Season of Hell's Legacy end?
Blizzard has not said, as of Oct 20, 2026: neither the season page, the season post nor the patch notes give an end date. Seasons have usually run about three months and end when the next begins, so dates on tracker sites in early December are guesses from that pattern, not Blizzard's. What Blizzard has said about the next season is on Season 16.

SeasonsDiablo 4 has had 15 seasons, each about three months long, from Season of the Malignant (Jul 20, 2023) to the current Season of Hell's Legacy (since Sep 15, 2026). Seasons are free, played with a new or reborn character on the Seasonal Realm, and Blizzard has confirmed a Season 16 without a date as of Oct 20, 2026. -
War PlansWar Plans are Lord of Hatred's endgame system: at the Command Table in Temis you chain up to five activities from six modes (the Pit, Infernal Hordes, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Bosses and the Kurast Undercity), claim rewards from the War Chest and level a modifier tree for each activity. Since Season of Hell's Legacy (Sep 15, 2026), War Plans progress is shared by your characters in the same partition. -
Mythic UniquesMythic Uniques are Diablo 4's rarest items. Since Season 14 (Jun 30, 2026) Mythic is an item quality, so any Unique can drop as a Mythic or be made into one (always Ancestral, Unique power +30%), while the classic set, the Iconic Mythics such as Harlequin Crest and The Grandfather, stays Mythic-only. -
CraftingDiablo 4 crafting in 2026 runs through five places: the Blacksmith (Tempering, Masterworking, Mythic caches), the Occultist (Aspects from the Codex of Power, Enchanting), the Jeweler (gems, Runes, Mythics with Resplendent Sparks), Lord of Hatred's Horadric Cube (add, remove or reroll affixes, raise rarity, upgrade Uniques to Mythic) and the Talisman, whose Seals hold Charms with set bonuses. -
Battle Pass and ShopDiablo 4's Battle Pass is a set of Reliquaries: one free each season, plus premium ones sold for Platinum, 1,000 Platinum for the Premium bundle or 2,800 for the Deluxe bundle in Season of Hell's Legacy. The in-game shop sells cosmetics for Platinum, Blizzard's real-money currency (1,000 Platinum costs $9.99), and Blizzard sells no item power. -
Patch NotesDiablo 4's latest patch is 3.2.3 (Build #73883, all platforms), released on Oct 14, 2026; it fixed a seasonal questline bug with the Splinters of the Prime Evils, Baal's loot, two boss encounters and Horadric Cube rerolls. This page lists every major patch since launch with its date, and how Blizzard's public test realms work.
