Echoing Hatred
Echoing Hatred is Lord of Hatred's endless wave activity in Diablo 4: offer a rare Trace of Echoes to the Sightless Eye in Temis to fight escalating waves of random monsters and several bosses at once, with better loot the longer you last. It has been capped at 150 waves since patch 3.1.0 (Jun 30, 2026).
Echoing Hatred is Lord of Hatred's endless wave activity: you offer a rare item called a Trace of Echoes to the Sightless Eye in Temis and fight wave after wave of escalating monsters, with several bosses at once in the later waves, until you are overwhelmed, and since patch 3.1.0 (Jun 30, 2026) a run stops at 150 waves. Blizzard introduced it in this clip from the Diablo 30th Anniversary Spotlight (Feb 11, 2026) as "a hyper-rare event": find the Trace of Echoes, which its developers call a "golden ticket", and you face "infinite waves of enemies and escalating difficulty", where "the longer you last, the better the loot." It is the Endgame's test of how far a build can go, and it needs the expansion.

Unlocking it
Echoing Hatred comes with Lord of Hatred, whose capital Temis is the endgame hub; the Sightless Eye stands there. To start a run you need a Trace of Echoes, which Blizzard describes only as "a rare Trace of Echoes item" (Blizzard, Apr 23, 2026). Blizzard's notes speak of Echoing Hatred keys dropping from Elite and Champion monsters, and patch 3.1.0 raised that drop rate (Blizzard, 3.1 patch notes); since patch 3.2.1 (Sep 15, 2026), the Keys Caches you earn from Whispers also have "a small chance to contain a Mephisto Key or Trace of Echoes" (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Each run uses up one Trace.
How a run works
Once you offer the Trace, Blizzard says you "enter a realm where the minions overflow, battling you until you are eventually overwhelmed." In this clip of developer footage shown by GameSpot, a hero cuts through packs of demons with fire and lightning while more keep coming, as the narration explains that each run has randomized monsters, that the encounters grow more intense the deeper you go, and that the team "might even throw multiple bosses at you at the same time." There is no timer to beat: the run lasts as long as you survive, up to the wave cap.
IGN's reviewer of Lord of Hatred calls it "effectively a horde mode" that starts at the lowest difficulty and climbs as you push through the waves until it reaches "absurd levels of challenge", then rewards you "relative to how well you performed". Parties can run it together: Echoing Hatred has been in the Party Finder since patch 3.0.1 (Apr 27, 2026), and patch 3.1.0 fixed players outside the party being able to use the Sightless Eye's pedestal.
The wave cap
At launch a run had no ceiling. Patch 3.1.0, released with Season of Death Awakening on Jun 30, 2026, gave Echoing Hatred "a maximum wave cap of 150", and in the same patch raised the drop rate of its keys (Blizzard, 3.1 patch notes). Blizzard has not said what changes at each wave, so this page gives no table of waves.
Rewards and why to play it
Blizzard's only rule for rewards is that the longer you last, the better the loot; it has not published drop tables for Echoing Hatred. IGN's reviewer found another use: because the waves climb through the difficulty levels, a run shows "which world tier your current build is ready to withstand", the reviewer's words for the Torment levels described on Difficulty and Torment. The same review's complaint is the entry cost: a mode that "you only get to play every once in a blue moon" because each run eats a rare consumable.
Echoing Hatred and Echo of Mephisto
The names are close but these are two different things. Echoing Hatred is the wave mode; Echo of Mephisto is Lord of Hatred's three-stage pinnacle boss fight, which since patch 3.2.1 guarantees a Mythic drop (see Bosses). Both went into the Party Finder together in patch 3.0.1, and the Whisper Keys Caches can hold the key to either. For another wave mode without a rare entry item, Infernal Hordes runs 60-second waves opened with an Infernal Compass, and it is one of the six activities that War Plans chain; Echoing Hatred is not among them (Blizzard, Apr 23, 2026).

Every edition includes Vessel of Hatred; Standard costs $39.99. -
EndgameDiablo 4's endgame in 2026 is built around War Plans in Temis, which chain up to five runs of the Pit, Infernal Hordes, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Bosses and the Kurast Undercity, with Echoing Hatred, Torment I to XII and each season's own activities on top. War Plans and Echoing Hatred need Lord of Hatred; the activities themselves and the Torment levels are free for every owner of the base game. -
Difficulty and TormentDiablo 4 has four standard difficulties (Normal, Hard, Expert and Penitent) and twelve Torment levels, Torment I to XII, since Lord of Hatred (Apr 27, 2026), up from Torment I to IV in Vessel of Hatred's patch 2.0; the original World Tiers were retired in Oct 2024. Torment levels unlock by clearing Pit tiers and give more gold, experience and better drops. -
BossesDiablo 4's endgame bosses are the Lair Bosses (since Season 8, Apr 29, 2025) in three tiers, Initiate, Greater and Exalted, plus the Butcher, Echo of Lilith and Lord of Hatred's Echo of Mephisto. Lair Bosses cost nothing to fight; their loot sits in a Hoard opened with that boss's own Lair Boss Keys. -
Infernal HordesInfernal Hordes is Diablo 4's wave mode, added in Season 5 (Aug 6, 2024) and permanent on both realms: open it with an Infernal Compass, survive 60-second waves, pick Infernal Offers (a boon with a bane), collect Burning Aether, then beat the Fell Council or Bartuc, Lord of Chaos, and spend the Aether on the Spoils of Hell. -
War PlansWar Plans are Lord of Hatred's endgame system: at the Command Table in Temis you chain up to five activities from six modes (the Pit, Infernal Hordes, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Bosses and the Kurast Undercity), claim rewards from the War Chest and level a modifier tree for each activity. Since Season of Hell's Legacy (Sep 15, 2026), War Plans progress is shared by your characters in the same partition.
