Infernal Hordes
Infernal Hordes is Diablo 4's wave mode, added in Season 5 (Aug 6, 2024) and permanent on both realms: open it with an Infernal Compass, survive 60-second waves, pick Infernal Offers (a boon with a bane), collect Burning Aether, then beat the Fell Council or Bartuc, Lord of Chaos, and spend the Aether on the Spoils of Hell.
Infernal Hordes is Diablo 4's wave mode: you open it with an Infernal Compass, survive 60-second waves of densely packed demons, choose an Infernal Offer (a boon paired with a bane) after each wave, collect Burning Aether, beat the Fell Council at the end and spend the Aether on the Spoils of Hell. Blizzard added it in Season of the Infernal Hordes (Aug 6, 2024) and kept it on both the Seasonal and Eternal Realms; Season of Infernal Chaos (Sep 23, 2025) added Chaos Waves and Bartuc, Lord of Chaos, also for good. Since Lord of Hatred it is one of the six modes of War Plans, which Blizzard's developers list in this clip: "the Pit, Infernal Hordes, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Bosses, and the Undercity". It is part of the Endgame for every Diablo 4 owner; no expansion is needed to play it.

How to unlock Infernal Hordes
Infernal Hordes arrived with Season 5's questline "The Eyes of the Enemy", which introduced the mode on both realms and needed to be completed only once per account (not counting Hardcore characters); at the time it unlocked in World Tier III (Blizzard, Jul 30, 2024). World Tiers were replaced by difficulties in patch 2.0. Today the key is simply an Infernal Compass: use one to open the gates to the Realm of Hatred. Before Torment, Season 10 added Fleeting Hordes, a shorter run of four waves with limited offerings (Blizzard, Sep 2025).
Infernal Compasses and tiers
Infernal Compasses drop from endgame content and can be crafted at the Occultist. At launch they came from Chests of Mystery, Chests of Steel and Helltide Doomsayers, which always drop one, and had a 75% chance to drop from Whisper Caches; higher tiers drop in Nightmare Dungeons and the Pit. A compass's tier raises the monsters' starting difficulty and the rewards, and lowers the number of revives. Abyssal Scrolls upgrade a compass's tier in the field. Patch 3.2.1 (Sep 15, 2026) cut the Occultist's price for a compass from 666 to 500 Sigil Powder and raised the Sigil Powder from salvaging one from 25 to 100.
Waves and Infernal Offers
Each wave lasts 60 seconds. Survive it and you are "taunted with an Infernal Offer": a choice between three pairs of a boon and a bane that make the run harder and more rewarding. Offers stack for the whole run, so many are active at once, and they also apply to the Fell Council. You have limited revives; lose them all and you are thrown out, unable to open any Spoils. Aether Fiends and Aether Lords roam the waves, and a hellish variant of the Butcher can appear (Blizzard, Jul 30, 2024).
Season of Infernal Chaos added Chaos Waves: Chaos Offerings occasionally appear between waves and turn the next wave into a harder one, with Chaos Rifts firing projectiles, a rampaging Hellwyrm or Aether Goblins, that pays "far more Aether" if you survive (Blizzard, Sep 2025).
Burning Aether and the Spoils of Hell
Burning Aether comes from Aether Fiends, Aether Lords, Soulspires and Aetheric Masses, 2 Aether each; it is earned per player even in a group, your pet helps collect it, and you keep it when you die. After the last boss you spend it on the Spoils of Hell: at launch a Spoils of Hell chest cost 20 Aether, and the Spoils of Greater Equipment, which guarantee an item with a Greater Affix, cost 60. The Spoils hold Masterworking materials, gold, summoning materials, Legendary and Unique items, and the best chance at the Hell-forged Uniques Season 5 added. Since patch 3.1.0 (Jun 30, 2026) the Gold Chest gives more gold, scaling with your Aether (Blizzard).
The Fell Council and Bartuc
At the end of every run the Fell Council "requests your presence": corrupted priests, "acolytes of hatred" unseen since the events of Diablo 2, of whom 3 of 5 are picked at random each time, each with unique attacks, who grow frenzied as they take damage. Beating them pays more Aether and opens the Spoils.
Since Season 10 the end of a run offers a choice, and one option is Bartuc, Lord of Chaos: each member of the party spends Aether for the chance to fight him, and the first player to pick Bartuc decides for the party. His rewards fall on the ground with no further Aether to spend. In that season, Bartuc in Torment III and IV was a guaranteed source of Chaos Armor, and in Torment I and II a smaller chance (Blizzard, Sep 2025). Chaos Waves and the Bartuc fight are permanent on both realms. More bosses are on Bosses.
Infernal Hordes and Echoing Hatred
Lord of Hatred added a second wave mode, Echoing Hatred, and the two are easy to confuse. Infernal Hordes is a fixed run of timed waves that ends with a boss; Echoing Hatred, as Blizzard describes it in this clip, is a "hyper-rare event" opened with a Trace of Echoes, with "infinite waves of enemies and escalating difficulty" and several bosses at once, where "the longer you last, the better the loot". Patch 3.1.0 capped Echoing Hatred at 150 waves. Infernal Hordes needs no expansion; Echoing Hatred needs Lord of Hatred.
Infernal Hordes in War Plans and seasons
Inside a War Plan, Infernal Hordes is a node like any other, with its own activity tree; patch 3.1.0 increased the rewards and base activity experience for Infernal Hordes in War Plans (Blizzard, Jun 23, 2026). Seasons change it too. In Season of Hell's Legacy you bear one of three Splinters of Evil, and Blizzard's designers explain in this clip that a Splinter lets you "upgrade war plans and start modifying your activities"; Diablo's Splinter of Terror is the one that modifies Helltide and Infernal Hordes. For every season's changes, see Seasons.
