Characters

Diablo 4's main characters are the Wanderer (the player), Lilith, Lorath Nahr, Neyrelle, Inarius and Mephisto, joined by Eru and Akarat in Vessel of Hatred and by Queen Adreona and Tyrael in Lord of Hatred. Lilith is voiced by Caroline Faber, Lorath by Ralph Ineson, Neyrelle by Judy Alice Lee and Mephisto by Steve Blum.

Diablo 4's main characters are the Wanderer, the hero the player creates, and the people and powers around them: Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred, who is the villain of the base game; Lorath Nahr, the last Horadrim; the young scholar Neyrelle; the fallen angel Inarius; and Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, the villain of both expansions. Vessel of Hatred (2024) adds the Spiritborn Eru and the prophet Akarat, and Lord of Hatred (2026) adds Adreona, High Queen of the Amazons, and the return of Tyrael. Together the base game and its two expansions tell what Blizzard calls the Age of Hatred saga. At BlizzCon 2026 a Diablo 5 developer said what made Lord of Hatred work was "the depth of that relationship that you get to build with Lilith and with Mephisto": by that point, the Wanderer is "not just a wanderer anymore" but "central to the story of these eternal characters". The plot itself is on Story; this page is a guide to who is who. Spoilers for all three campaigns follow.

The Wanderer

The Wanderer is the player character, of any class and either sex where the class allows it. Blizzard's own recap describes "a hero marked by the blood of Lilith in his veins", chosen "to decide the fate of Sanctuary, aided by the Horadric wisdom of Lorath Nahr and Neyrelle". The Wanderer has no fixed voice: each base game class has a female and a male voice actor (see the cast table below). The classes themselves are on Classes.

Lilith

Lilith is the Daughter of Hatred, Mephisto's daughter, and, with the angel Inarius, the creator of Sanctuary and the mother of humanity. Elias summoned her back from the Void, and she spent the base campaign trying to make humanity strong enough to face the Burning Hells and to consume her father's power. The Wanderer defeated her in the Cathedral of Hatred, and in Lord of Hatred she returns as a reluctant ally. Caroline Faber voices her. Her full story is on Lilith.

Lorath Nahr

Lorath Nahr is the gruff old Horadrim who guides the Wanderer through all three campaigns, voiced by Ralph Ineson. In Blizzard's telling he was born the son of a blacksmith in Westmarch, joined the Horadrim just before the Reaping and fought beside the archangel Tyrael to stop Malthael. In Lord of Hatred's launch trailer he shouts "No more damn tricks!", and when the Paladin swears to make Mephisto pay, he answers: "We both will, my friend. We both will." He does not live to see it. Blizzard's own account says Lorath found "the weapon that would stop Mephisto for good" but was cut down by Queen Adreona, "a woman he had loved", and that his allies burned the Tree of Whispers to free his soul (Lord of Hatred Ending).

Neyrelle

Neyrelle is the young scholar who meets the Wanderer while searching for her mother, Vhenard, becomes a Horadrim, and in the base game's finale chooses to imprison Mephisto in a soulstone and carry it away. Vessel of Hatred follows her into Nahantu, and Lord of Hatred ends her story: Mephisto finds her and kills her. Judy Alice Lee voices her. Her page is Neyrelle.

Inarius and the base game cast

Inarius, voiced by Gabe Kunda, is the angel who made Sanctuary with Lilith and later banished her. In Diablo 4 he leads the Cathedral of Light, kills his own son Rathma for the Hell Key, and dies in Hell, where Lilith runs him "through with his own spear before tearing his wings from his back" (Blizzard). The base game's other figures are Elias, Lorath's former apprentice who summoned Lilith and lost his head to the Tree of Whispers; Rathma, the first Necromancer; Vhenard, Neyrelle's mother; Donan, a former Horadrim whose son Yorin became the host of the demon Astaroth; Meshif, a sailor who once traveled with the heroes of Diablo 2; Vigo of the Knights Penitent; the Reverend Mother Prava; and the druid Airidah.

Mephisto

Mephisto is one of the three Prime Evils, the Lord of Hatred and Lilith's father, voiced by Steve Blum. Sealed in a soulstone at the end of the base game, he takes the body of the prophet Akarat at the end of Vessel of Hatred and comes to Skovos in that guise in Lord of Hatred, where the Wanderer banishes him to the Void. His page is Mephisto.

Vessel of Hatred: Eru and Akarat

Eru is the Spiritborn guide who helps the Wanderer chase Neyrelle through the jungles of Nahantu and then betrays them: he seizes Akarat's body and the soulstone and leaves through a rift with the words "I've done my part... See that you do yours." Akarat is the prophet whose teachings founded the Zakarum faith; Blizzard says he was born in Xiansai to an Umbaru mother and a Xian father and, with his acolyte Ysevete, founded the Spiritborn tradition. His spirit sacrifices itself to defeat Mephisto's wolf avatar, and his body becomes Mephisto's new vessel at Travincal. The Knight Penitent Urivar, leader of the "Burned Knights", hunts Neyrelle and dies at the Wanderer's hand; Maka of the Council of Kurast is killed by the evil inside Neyrelle. The expansion is on Vessel of Hatred.

Lord of Hatred: Adreona, the false Akarat and Tyrael

Lord of Hatred's launch trailer opens on Skovos with the Amazon Queen announcing that "a pilgrim comes to our shores": a gray-bearded old man stands before a woman in a winged helmet holding a spear, and the man the captions name Akarat says, "It is in our nature to hate." The pilgrim is Mephisto in Akarat's body. Adreona, High Queen of the Amazons, rose from the ranks of the Amazon Legion and was chosen by the Council of Veterans through "the Passage", Blizzard says; years earlier she had worked beside Lorath on Skovos and "forged a close bond". Mephisto turns her against her own people and against Lorath, she kills him, and the Wanderer's party strikes her down on the cliffs of Mount Hefaetrus. Blizzard's site says Skovos is ruled by "The Oracle and Amazon Queen". The expansion is on Lord of Hatred.

Tyrael, the former archangel who founded the Horadrim, comes back in Lord of Hatred: Grimdark Magazine's review describes the Wanderer reconnecting with "Lorath and ex-angel, founder of the Horadrim, Tyrael". Blizzard has not named his Diablo 4 voice actor, as of Oct 21, 2026.

Season characters

Each season adds characters of its own. Deckard Cain, "our treasured voice of the franchise", hosts Season of Hell's Legacy, the 15th season: the dead are returning to life, so Blizzard brought him back as a returned soul, "voiced by the one and only Michael Gough", the developers said at BlizzCon 2026. He comes back confused, "thinking it's 1285 when he died", and tasks the Wanderer with redeeming three Dark Wanderers. Akara of Diablo 2 advises him (Blizzard). Earlier seasons brought Cormond (Season 1), the vampire hunter Erys, voiced by Gemma Chan (Season 2), Ayuzhan (Season 3), the witch Gelena (Season 7), Bryona (Season 9), Shyan (Season 10) and the angel Hadriel (Season 11). The seasons are on Seasons and the current one on Season of Hell's Legacy.

Season of Hell's Legacy also brings back old faces as memories in its Waking Nightmares. Lead encounter designer Owen Leach named Pepin the healer, Griswold the blacksmith and Adria the witch from the first Diablo and, his favorite, Tyrael "from Diablo II in angelic form". The team rebuilt their models but imported their old voice lines and music from the earlier games, so Tyrael speaks with his old Diablo 2 voice. Leah, whose story ended tragically, returns too, as a memory rather than in the flesh.

Cast

Blizzard's short "The Voices of Sanctuary" from BlizzCon 2026 seats some of the series' voice actors together on stage, trading lines such as "Your bones betray you, and they shall soon serve me." Blizzard does not caption their names. The base game's cast, as PCGamesN listed it on Jun 6, 2023:
