Neyrelle
Neyrelle is the young scholar who joins the Wanderer and Lorath Nahr in Diablo 4's base game, chooses to imprison Mephisto in a soulstone and carry it away, leads Vessel of Hatred's search for Akarat's tomb, and is killed by Mephisto in Lord of Hatred. Judy Alice Lee voices her.
Neyrelle is the young scholar who joins the Wanderer and Lorath Nahr in Diablo 4's base game, becomes a Horadrim, and at the end of the 2023 campaign chooses to imprison Mephisto in a soulstone and carry it away herself. That choice drives Vessel of Hatred (2024), in which she takes the stone into the jungles of Nahantu to seal it in the tomb of the prophet Akarat, and it ends in Lord of Hatred (2026): Blizzard's own account says that just as she found a way to stop Mephisto "and sent word to her friends, Mephisto found her. And at last, took her life." Blizzard's opening cinematic for Lord of Hatred, which Blizzard warned contains spoilers, stays with a dark-haired young woman working alone among books and scrolls by candlelight. Judy Alice Lee voices Neyrelle. Spoilers for every Diablo 4 campaign follow.

The base game: Vhenard and Lilith
Blizzard calls Neyrelle "a brilliant, young explorer and seeker of knowledge whose fateful encounter with Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred, set her on a path to become a true Horadrim". She came to the Fractured Peaks with her mother, Vhenard, in search of the Horadrim, but Lilith tempted Vhenard with demonic power. Corrupted, Vhenard tried to kill her own daughter, and the Wanderer had to bring her down. Neyrelle later performed a ritual to raise her mother briefly from the dead, long enough for Vhenard to help open the way after Lilith "and to bid her daughter, her 'Magpie', a regretful goodbye". Rather than despair, Neyrelle stayed with the Wanderer and Lorath, "proving her worth as a scholar and protector of Sanctuary", at a heavy price: "including her own left hand". The base campaign is on Story.
The soulstone choice
In the depths of the Burning Hells, Blizzard writes, Neyrelle "was asked to make an impossible decision: Imprison Lilith and allow her father Mephisto to return? Or imprison Mephisto to delay his return and deny Lilith her prize?" She chose to imprison Mephisto, and after the Wanderer defeated Lilith in the Cathedral of Hatred, Neyrelle carried Mephisto's soulstone away alone. "She tried with all she had to find a way to keep Mephisto imprisoned, but his corruption proved too much to bear."
Vessel of Hatred
Vessel of Hatred is Neyrelle's story, and it ends on a cliffhanger: IGN's review of Lord of Hatred opens by saying the 2024 expansion "left me dangling off a narrative cliff like a hapless Sanctuary peasant". Blizzard's recap follows her into Nahantu in search of the lost tomb of Akarat, the prophet of the Zakarum faith, with the soulstone tormenting her "with horrific visions of the future of Sanctuary"; her hold on reality slipped, "as manifested in the monstrous Hollows", and her one tether to sanity was the memory of her mother and of the heroes who had beaten the other Prime Evils. The Wanderer and the Spiritborn Eru followed her; the Knight Penitent Urivar and his Burned Knights hunted her and died at the Wanderer's hand; and Maka of the Council of Kurast, who tried to help her, was killed by "the evil within the young woman". In the tomb the soulstone was placed on Akarat's body, severing Neyrelle's link to Mephisto, but Eru betrayed them and took body and stone, and the expansion ends with Mephisto rising in Akarat's body. The expansion is on Vessel of Hatred.
Lord of Hatred: her death
Even free of the soulstone, Neyrelle "remained haunted by his presence", Blizzard writes, and "never stopped searching for a way to stop Mephisto. To break the cycle of Hatred for good." In Lord of Hatred's opening cinematic, a long-haired, gray-bearded man watches from a pale doorway while the young woman works by candlelight, and a dove lands on the stone floor beside a hand. Mephisto came to Skovos disguised in Akarat's body, which matches the bearded figure; Blizzard does not caption the scene.
The cinematic ends badly for her. The bearded man walks between pillars toward the camera, a hooded figure holds a small flame, the young woman lies on her back on the stone floor, and fire climbs a wall. Blizzard's text is the only account this viki repeats: "just as she found it and sent word to her friends, Mephisto found her. And at last, took her life. She died as a true Horadrim, wearing the talisman given to her by Lorath." What her discovery set in motion is on Lord of Hatred and Lord of Hatred Ending.
