Difficulty and Torment

Diablo 4 has four standard difficulties (Normal, Hard, Expert and Penitent) and twelve Torment levels, Torment I to XII, since Lord of Hatred (Apr 27, 2026), up from Torment I to IV in Vessel of Hatred's patch 2.0; the original World Tiers were retired in Oct 2024. Torment levels unlock by clearing Pit tiers and give more gold, experience and better drops.

Diablo 4 has four standard difficulties, Normal, Hard, Expert and Penitent, and above them twelve Torment levels, Torment I to XII: Lord of Hatred expanded Torment "from 4 to 12" on Apr 27, 2026, for every player whether or not they own the expansion. IGN's reviewer calls it in this clip "plenty of runway with 12 tiers of end-game difficulty, up from just four previously". Each step up makes monsters deadlier and pays more gold and experience and better drops, and Torment levels open by clearing tiers of The Pit. The original system of World Tiers was retired with Vessel of Hatred's patch 2.0 in Oct 2024, so a guide that still talks about World Tier III or IV is out of date.

The four standard difficulties

Patch 2.0 changed World Tiers into "Difficulties", and the first four are the Standard Difficulties (Blizzard, Aug 29, 2024):

  • Normal: "a slower-paced mode suited for those looking for a lighter challenge"; open from the start.
  • Hard: a faster pace and more challenge; open from the start.
  • Expert: harder again; open after the Prologue.
  • Penitent: "isn't for the faint of heart", the step before Torment. In patch 2.0 it opened at level 50.

Patch 3.2.1 (Sep 15, 2026) made Expert and Penitent available "upon completion of the Prologue, instead of requiring campaign completion". Since 2.0, monsters show no level and scale to the difficulty you play, and higher difficulties pay more gold and experience. The standard difficulties are where you level toward the cap of 70; the Leveling Guide covers that road.

Torment I to XII

Torment is "where the endgame truly begins", in Blizzard's words, and your progress there is "directly linked to the Pit" (Blizzard, Aug 29, 2024). In patch 2.0 there were four levels, opened by beating Pit Tier 20, 35, 50 and 65. Lord of Hatred added Torment V to XII, and Blizzard says the new levels intensify the danger while "awarding bigger gold and experience bonuses and improved drop rates on coveted gear and materials" (Blizzard, Apr 23, 2026). Blizzard's own pages read for this guide give no Pit tier per Torment level for Lord of Hatred; Destructoid reported on Apr 30, 2026 that a character needs level 60 and a Pit Tier 10 clear for Torment I, and that later levels need higher tiers. Once a level is unlocked you can choose it for your character, and with the "Story Complete: Endgame" start some challenges stay "locked behind Torment difficulties" until you earn them.

Destructoid listed each level's bonuses at launch; patch 3.2.1 later raised the top three (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026):

Torment Experience bonus Gold bonus
I 300% 100%
II 400% 120%
III 500% 140%
IV 600% 160%
V 700% 180%
VI 800% 200%
VII 900% 225%
VIII 1,000% 250%
IX 1,100% 275%
X 1,300% (1,200% before 3.2.1) 300%
XI 1,500% (1,300% before 3.2.1) 300%
XII 1,700% (1,400% before 3.2.1) 300%

What higher Torment gives

The higher the Torment level, the better the loot. Since patch 2.0, Ancestral items, the only items with Greater Affixes, start dropping in Torment I. Season 14 made Mythic Unique crafting available from level 70 in Torment, the start of the chase described on Mythic Uniques. Patch notes since Lord of Hatred tie many drops to Torment levels (Blizzard; Blizzard):

  • Torment I to V: higher Legendary drop rates since patch 3.2.1, to fill the Codex of Power sooner
  • Torment VII and up: far more Refined Primordial Dust (3.1.0)
  • Torment VIII and up: more War Plans experience (3.1.0)
  • Torment X and up: more Gem Fragments and Royal Gems from Elites, and 4 experience orbs per War Plans node instead of 2 (3.2.1)
  • Torment XII: a Whisper Gold Cache worth about 100 million gold, up from about 35 million

Some content needs Torment: Lair Bosses (Torment I or higher), Exalted Astaroth at the end of an Escalating Nightmare (Torment I and up) and, in Season of Hell's Legacy, the pinnacle Capstone dungeons at Torment 10 and above.

Penalties: armor and resistance

Torment hits back. When patch 2.0 introduced it, each level cursed your character with lower armor and resistances: Torment I -250 armor and -25% to all resistances, Torment II -500 and -50%, Torment III -750 and -75%, Torment IV -1,000 and -100%. Blizzard has not published the penalties for Torment V to XII in the pages read for this guide, and Season 11's defense rework (the Toughness stat, Dec 11, 2025) changed how defense works (Blizzard), so take the 2.0 figures as history.

Finding your level

Blizzard does not recommend a Torment level for any build: once a level is unlocked, you choose where to play. IGN's reviewer found another gauge in Echoing Hatred, Lord of Hatred's endless wave mode, which starts easy and climbs until you fall: in this clip he calls it "pretty useful as a way of gauging" which difficulty a build is ready for. The Endgame page lists every activity to test a build in.

Pinnacle Capstones

The top of the ladder gets content of its own each season. In Season of Hell's Legacy the largest Waking Nightmares, replays of the Prime Evil showdowns from earlier Diablo games, return as Capstone dungeons with a fixed difficulty and, at Torment 10 and above, as pinnacle Capstones "for greater risks and bigger loot" (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Blizzard's designers call them in this clip "the hardest, biggest dungeons we've ever made".

World Tiers: the launch system

From launch (Jun 2023) until patch 2.0 (Oct 2024), Diablo 4 used four World Tiers. World Tier III, "Nightmare", was where Helltides opened (Blizzard, Sep 19, 2022). Blizzard retired them because, in its words, World Tier III and Sacred items "felt artificial and added a lot of stat bloat that didn't make the game more fun" (Blizzard, Aug 29, 2024). Sacred items went with them. The same patch raised the level cap to 60; Lord of Hatred raised it to 70.

Hardcore

Hardcore is a separate choice from difficulty: you pick it when you create a character, and a Hardcore character who dies is gone for good. It combines with any difficulty and Torment level and with Solo Self Found, the Seasonal-only mode without parties or trade added in Season 14 (Blizzard, Jun 23, 2026). Hardcore characters keep their own War Plans progress, apart from Normal ones.
