Diablo 5

Diablo 5, announced at BlizzCon on Sep 12, 2026 for Spring 2029, is set about 100 years after Diablo 4, in a Sanctuary Diablo has conquered after a Golden Age that followed Mephisto's defeat. Blizzard keeps supporting Diablo 4 with seasons and the 2027 Amazon Class Pack; no more Diablo 4 expansions are currently planned.

Diablo 5, which Blizzard writes Diablo V, was announced at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on Sep 12, 2026 for Spring 2029, and it is set about 100 years after Diablo 4, in a Sanctuary that Diablo has already conquered. "Diablo 5 is coming in Spring 2029," Blizzard says on stage, then: "The heroes are gone. Sanctuary has fallen. And Diablo has won." Diablo 4 is not ending with the announcement: Blizzard keeps supporting it with seasons and the Amazon Class Pack in the first half of 2027, while saying no more Diablo 4 expansions are currently planned (Brent Gibson, Sep 2026). Diablo 5 has its own video wiki at diablo5.vi.ki.

Announced at BlizzCon 2026

Blizzard revealed Diablo 5 on Sep 12, 2026, in the series' 30th anniversary year, with a teaser at the opening ceremony and a panel, "Forging the Next Era", the same day (Blizzard). Its senior art director opens the panel by recalling the last time he shared a stage with the team, "way back in 2019 when we announced" Diablo 4, "and I'm really happy to be back here today to say that we are hard at work on Diablo 5." The reveal and its panels are covered in full on the Diablo 5 wiki's BlizzCon 2026 reveal page.

The announcement came straight after Diablo 4's own. Having just given the Amazon's window, the ceremony's Diablo segment turns: "that's what's coming for Diablo 4. But today, we're also ready to look beyond the age of hatred to give you a first glimpse of Diablo's next era."

Is Diablo 5 after Diablo 4?

Yes, about a century after. Brent Gibson told PC Gamer: "The events of Diablo 5 happen 100 years after everything that's happening with Diablo 4, and so that gives us a lot of room to kind of still ride the wave with all the fans on where the story can go as we make our way there" (PC Gamer, Sep 12, 2026). Diablo 4's victory held for a while: at the Diablo 5 panel the team says "what you did in defeating Mephisto, it worked. There was a golden age of sanctuary. There was a time where sanctuary was a better place than we've ever seen it." So Diablo 5 is not a direct sequel to the end of Lord of Hatred (Lord of Hatred Ending); the Golden Age and Diablo's conquest come between them.

The art team describes the gap the same way: they fill the world with "what has gone on since like the last, you know, hundred years, especially the last seven years since like sanctuary fell". Diablo 5 opens "7 years after he has taken over Westmarch", and you play "the heir to Westmarch", Senior Producer Tiffany Watt and Art Director John Mueller told Windows Central (Windows Central, Sep 13, 2026). Its story is on the Diablo 5 wiki's story and setting page.

The teaser sets the tone: a narrator says "The angels were supposed to save us," cultists cry "Joy! The Lord has returned!", and the narrator ends: "Sanctuary is his. The Lord of Terror has returned."

Why a sequel, not another expansion

Blizzard wanted Diablo himself at the center, which an expansion could not hold. In an interview with IGN at BlizzCon, a member of the Diablo 5 team says the game needed "a full campaign and full story based around Diablo", and that "we've jumped a hundred years ahead to tell that story so that" Diablo 4 "has lots of space to continue their story". Gibson framed the change of saga for PC Gamer: "We feel like we told the Story of Hatred. We had a great conclusion with Lord of Hatred with what we have with Mephisto, and we are moving towards telling the Story of Terror."

Will Diablo 4 continue after Diablo 5 was announced?

Yes. Asked by IGN what Diablo 5 can do that Diablo 4 cannot, with "2 and a half, 3 years" still to go, the team answers that Diablo 4 is "fully supported" and lists that week's news: the Amazon, Season of Hell's Legacy and the move to Nintendo Switch 2, with "ongoing support" to come. Gibson told PC Gamer: "We're all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and getting to Diablo 5," and "We're continuing to support the game for a very long time."

What that support looks like was laid out at the What's Next panel the next day: seasons that tell one story "based on Lord of Hatred", from the death cult of Season of Death Awakening through the dead returning in Season of Hell's Legacy, to the seasons leading up to the Amazon's release, where players "ultimately confront the aspect of death" (Blizzard, Sep 13, 2026). Every season is on Seasons.

Will Diablo 4 get another expansion?

Not as things stand. Blizzard says no more Diablo 4 expansions are currently planned (Brent Gibson to PC Gamer, Sep 12, 2026), and Kotaku summed it up as "Diablo 4 Annual Expansions Are Done As Blizzard Focuses On Seasonal Stories Leading Up To Diablo 5" (Kotaku, Sep 13, 2026). Diablo 4 still ends with two, which GameSpot notes is more than any other Diablo game (GameSpot, Sep 13, 2026). The next paid content is the Amazon, sold as a Class Pack rather than an expansion, in the first half of 2027; Blizzard says its price and details will come "next year closer to release" (Blizzard).

Diablo 5 borrows from Diablo 4's last expansion: its crafting is "inspired by Lord of Hatred's approach", with Diablo 2-style Runes and Runewords, and its first classes are the Demon Hunter, the Monk and the new Plague Knight (Blizzard, Sep 12, 2026). Unlike Diablo 4, it has no towns: you travel with a caravan of survivors, and the world is procedural again, changing each time you return (diablo5.vi.ki: classes, caravan, procedural world). Blizzard has not said whether Diablo 4 characters, items or cosmetics carry over, as of Oct 21, 2026. How the Age of Hatred ended is on Story.
